Fans of Netflix's latest sci-fi sensation, '3 Body Problem', might have spotted a familiar landmark in the third episode of the mind-bending series.

Wells Cathedral, one of Somerset's most iconic buildings, served as a stunning backdrop in a pivotal scene featuring characters Jin and Jack in a dramatic exchange with the Pope, culminating in a visually striking moment as a fiery horse galloped through the nave.

The cathedral, known for its impressive Gothic architecture, was transformed into a film set in March 2022, with the production taking over two weeks to complete.

The shoot was made possible with assistance from Somerset Council's Highways Team and the Screen Somerset project, highlighting the region's growing appeal as a location for major film and TV productions.

'3 Body Problem' is just the latest in a long line of productions that have chosen Wells Cathedral as a backdrop, further cementing its status as a cinematic favourite:

  • Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (2023) saw the cathedral amidst an epic quest with stars like Hugh Grant and Chris Pine.
  • Hellboy (2019) featured David Harbour battling ancient forces in its sacred halls.
  • The historical drama Wolf Hall (2015), starring Damian Lewis and Mark Rylance, brought the tumultuous era of King Henry VIII to life within its walls.
  • In The Huntsman: Winter's War (2016), Chris Hemsworth and Charlize Theron's battle scenes gained an extra layer of grandeur from the cathedral's setting.
  • The White Princess (2017), with Jodie Comer, used the cathedral to depict royal intrigue and drama.
  • The cathedral stepped back in time for Robin of Sherwood (1984-1986), hosting tales of legendary outlaws.
  • The Canterbury Tales (1972) and Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) showcased the cathedral's timeless beauty in narratives spanning centuries.
  • The Libertine (2004), featuring Johnny Depp, delved into the life of a 17th-century poet with Wells Cathedral as a backdrop.
  • The story of The Six Wives of Henry VIII (2001) unfolded with the cathedral lending historical authenticity.
  • The Treasure of Abbot Thomas (1974) explored mystery and history within its confines.

The cathedral has also featured in episodes of The Hollow Crown, depicting the Wars of the Roses and the rise of Richard III, adding a regal presence to the Shakespearean dramas, and Wolf Hall.
