Wells Cathedral shuts for mystery filming as blockbuster rumours swirl

Visitors to Wells Cathedral will face a series of closures over the coming weeks, as filming preparations get under way for an unnamed production.
While the title is being kept tightly under wraps, there is speculation mounting online that it could be the new Masters of the Universe movie.
The Cathedral has confirmed that the Chapter House and its iconic stairs will be closed to the public from Tuesday, May 20 until Saturday, June 14. Access to the North Quire Aisle from the North Transept will also be restricted during this period, with barriers in place each day following Morning Liturgy.
On Wednesday, June 4, the entire Cathedral will be closed to the public from 7am to 7pm, with the exception of two services in the Lady Chapel – Morning Liturgy at 8am and Eucharist at 10am. Further closures will be in place on Thursday, June 5 and Friday, June 6, from 4pm to 6pm. The Cathedral café and shop will remain open throughout.
In a statement, the Cathedral apologised for any inconvenience caused by the disruption but did not confirm what production is being filmed.
However, the filming has sparked interest online, with fans and local observers pointing to casting calls recently issued by The Casting Collective for a "high-profile fantasy feature film" filming in Somerset and London between February and June 2025.
The company is looking for people of all ages and backgrounds in Somerset, as well as athletic and muscular individuals – including bodybuilders – to appear as extras. While the casting notices do not name the film, many believe the descriptions strongly suggest the Masters of the Universe reboot currently in development.
Wells Cathedral has been used in several film and television productions over the years, with its distinctive gothic architecture making it a popular choice for period dramas and fantasy epics.
