Wells Cathedral organ appeal approaches £1 million milestone
Supporters gathered at Wells Cathedral for a special event hosted by The Friends of Wells Cathedral on Thursday evening, showcasing the importance of the historic organ and raising awareness of its current state.
The event, held in the Quire, was attended by members of the congregation, supporters of the Grand Organ Appeal, and several local dignitaries. The evening featured performances demonstrating the organ's versatility, including solo pieces, an organ duet, and accompaniment for trumpet soloists from Wells Cathedral School and the Cathedral Chamber Choir. The audience also joined in a rendition of Jerusalem, accompanied by the organ.
The programme provided a chance for supporters to meet the new musical team at the Cathedral: Timothy Parsons (Director of Music), Carolyn Craig (Assistant Director of Music), and Edward Marshall (Organ Scholar).
The evening was also an opportunity to address the urgency of the restoration project. The organ has suffered significant mechanical failures, with two divisions— the Choir and the Positive—no longer functioning. Cathedral organists are currently working to disguise sticking notes, delays in reaction, and hissing sounds.
The Friends of Wells Cathedral have raised £950,000 so far, just £50,000 short of the £1 million milestone towards a £2 million target. The Reverend Toby Wright, Dean of Wells, said: "We now stand at a crossroads, where the past and future of our music meet. The organ must be restored to its full glory, and we ask for your help in making this possible."
The Friends are hoping to reach the £1 million mark by Christmas and are appealing for donations to support the project. Contributions can be made through the Cathedral's website or directly to the Friends of Wells Cathedral.
