Carnival is coming back to Wells
Carnival is coming back to Wells

It's been two years since the Carnival last rolled into the city, a break forced on organisers by the Covid19 pandemic.

But it's back, bright and noisy as ever and ready to put on a night to remember.

If you still haven't made it to the carnival this year, you can take your pick from Shepton Mallet tonight (November 16), Wells on Friday night, or Glastonbury on Saturday.

If you are heading to Wells, here is everything you need to know.

When and how to get there

As for most carnivals, you will need to get there early to avoid the road closures. The procession starts at 7pm, but roads will be closed from 6pm, including some all-day closures, which start at 9am.

Road Restrictions:

Friday 18th Novemberfrom 6am to 4am on Saturday morning

Tor Street (B3139) - NO PARKING - Tor Street will be the main entrance to Wells from Bishops Park Way (A371) and will also act as the main escape route.

Morrisons Supermarket - Full access from the Glastonbury roundabout until 6pm on Friday 18th November.

Road Closures:

Wednesday

The Wells relief road to Shepton Mallet (A371) will be closed from 7.30pm to 2am on Thursday to allow carts to travel from Shepton Mallet to Wells.

Thursday

The Wells relief road to Shepton Mallet will be a one-way system from 2am (Thursday) until Friday

Friday, November 18 - carnival day

  • Wells relief road will be closed 9am to 11pm (Shepton Mallet to Wells direction)
  • Dulcote Road from A39 south of Wells at Browne's Nursery to North Wootton via Launcherley will be closed from 6pm to midnight

  • Access to Crandon Springs Care Home, Fletcher House, & Wand Road Estate after 1900 hrs is via escort from carnival marshalls. For more information please call the Chief Marshall, Mr Rob Petch on 07729676596.
  • A39 Tin Bridge roundabout in Glastonbury will be closed from 6pm until 11pm

Diversion Route:

The official diversion route is via Green Ore (B3135)

Parking

Official car parking will be at Wells Rugby Club. While Tesco and Morrison car parks may be open, there is no agreement to waive the parking time limit, which means you will be parking at your own risk. Check the Wells City Carnival Facebook page for up-to-the-minute updates

Stoberry School and Wells Cathedral School will both have parking for the night.

Best vantage points

The procession starts at the Sherston Inn Roundabout and heads down Strawberry Way to Tucker Street, then Chamberlain Street, Sadler Street, along the High Street, Broad Street, ending in Broad Street, just before Priory Road.

Where to stand

If you have children with you (or a weak bladder) then Chamberlain Street, High Street and Priory Road near Princes Street are best because you are not too far away from public toilets.

Standing along Sadler Street means you can have a nice meal in one of the central restaurants and pop out when it is time for the carnival.

To leave fairly quickly after the event, you can park on South Street (note parking is limited) and then walk over to Broad Street. South Street itself will not be closed so while it may be busy, you do not have to wait for road closures to be lifted to travel home.
