It was standing room only at the Town Hall on Friday night for the launch of the Wells Climate Action Network at it's Wells CAN Do event.
Alongside a vegan supper cooked by Sustainable Living Designs, poetry from local wordsmith Denise Nevill and songs from Ross Wallis and Sue Rushforth attendees talked together about their carbon use.
They were given some help by Angela Terry, not only a local resident but also a nationally known climate scientist responsible for the development of the website One Home, which provides help and advice on low carbon living.
Angela took participants through those areas where the current life style of an average Wells resident results in emissions of about 12.5 tonnes of carbon per year, and then shared some ideas of what we can do to reduce this – from installing LED lightbulbs to using public transport or car sharing not to mention eating more locally produced food and cutting down on our consumption of "stuff".
"The Wells Climate Action Network is an initiative from the city council in partnership with local organisations to ensure that we are all better informed about the causes of the climate emergency and what we can do as individuals to address this," said Philip Welch, Wells City Council Deputy Mayor, who opened the event.
"We're keen to work with as many local organisations as we can and were grateful to be joined at the launch of Wells CAN Do by Project Factory, Somerset Climate Action Network and Sustainable Wells."
All the information about Wells CAN is available via the red button below. If you are interested in joining the Wells Climate Action Network, and want to know more, contact Sarah Briton via the Town Hall ([email protected] or tel 01749 673091).
