Wells café layouts face scrutiny over Market Place access
By Laura Linham 23rd Oct 2026
Tessa Munt has asked licensing officers to inspect access through Wells Market Place after a disabled resident described difficulties navigating café furniture and reaching shops.
The Wells and Mendip Hills MP told city councillors she had contacted Somerset's licensing team and invited officers to see the problems themselves. Her intervention followed concerns raised by Mrs Montague, who uses a mobility aid.
Speaking at the council's meeting on 24 September, the resident said tables and chairs outside cafés made getting around Market Place stressful. She also described a planter obstructing access to the postbox and having to move on and off the pavement to reach a vegetable stall.
Ms Munt suggested officers visit on a Wednesday market day. However, councillor Louis Agabani suggested a non-market day would be preferable because the chairs were not in place on market days.
Town clerk Haylee Wilkins said she had received information about pavement licences and would liaise with Ms Munt over the proposed visit.
