If your current working week involves moving emails between folders and wondering whether anybody would notice if you stopped, there are several possible escape routes available locally.

This week's vacancies cover healthcare, manufacturing, driving, management and retail, alongside a fully funded route into children's social work. There are options for early birds, career changers and people who can remain cheerful while everyone else asks where their parcel has gone.

Driving features heavily. A self-employed Morning Delivery Driver is wanted around Street, paying £105.07 a day to deliver newspapers and magazines while most residents are still negotiating with the alarm clock.

Those who prefer something heavier can earn £23.10 an hour delivering ready-mix concrete as a Class 2 Driver. Weekly pay, mixer training and the possibility of a permanent position are included.

In Wells, InPost is looking for an independent Service Delivery Partner with a van — or a fleet and team of drivers — to cover an allocated district. Potential earnings are listed at up to £25 an hour, paid per parcel. Applicants need the required insurance, a registered limited company and either their own 3.5-tonne van or drivers and vehicles ready to go. The arrangement comes with training and the freedom to plan each route, although that freedom may feel increasingly theoretical after encountering the third cottage called Rosebank with no visible number.

Retail offers two less vehicle-heavy options. A Retail Security Officer is needed at a Glastonbury store for £16.20 an hour, while a Merchandiser can pick up around two to four hours a week at £15.07 an hour. The security position has various shifts and requires a door supervision or security guarding SIA licence. Duties include protecting staff and customers, monitoring the premises and handling incidents professionally, even when the explanation offered for unpaid items tests the accepted limits of coincidence.

Merchandising work is flexible across the week, although some visits are fixed for Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The hours may increase during busy periods, making it a manageable way to earn extra money without rebuilding your entire identity around a new staff lanyard.

Anyone with professional experience in windows and doors can aim considerably higher on the earnings scale. An Experienced Window and Door Sales Consultant will receive a £30,000 basic salary, a fuel card and realistic total earnings listed at between £60,000 and £80,000.

The field-based territory covers Somerset, Bath, Wiltshire and Oxfordshire. It calls for somebody capable of discussing frames, glazing and fittings with sustained enthusiasm — a specialist skill unlikely to have been developed simply by watching somebody replace the patio doors.

Manufacturing work is available in Wells, where a cosmetics company needs a Production and Manufacturing Operative.

The permanent job pays £13 an hour and runs from 7am to 3.30pm, Monday to Friday, with Saturday overtime available. The successful applicant will help prepare cosmetic products for distribution as part of a busy production team, rather than spending the day thoughtfully testing moisturiser as the job title might briefly allow you to imagine.

There are several opportunities for people who prefer working directly with others. Experienced Care Support Workers are being recruited across Wells and the surrounding area, with the possibility of starting within seven days.

The positions pay £14.46 an hour including holiday pay, with weekly wages and a choice of day or night shifts. Full-time and part-time contracted work is available, although applicants need at least six months of recent paid UK care experience and must be able to travel reliably to local services.

At the more senior end of care, Orchard Vale Trust is seeking a Registered Home Manager for its 17-bed home in Wookey.

The manager will lead staff supporting adults with learning disabilities, oversee individual care plans and ensure the service meets safeguarding and Care Quality Commission requirements. It is a role requiring judgement, organisation and the ability to solve several completely unrelated problems before lunch without announcing that everyone needs to calm down.

A different kind of management position is available at St Athelm Lodge in Wells. Its new Lodge Manager will combine administration and customer service with supporting residents at the retirement development.

The role pays £19,643 a year for 27.5 hours a week, running from 9am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. It may suit somebody who enjoys knowing what is happening throughout a building without requiring the information to be delivered through a 46-slide presentation.

Over in Evercreech, Peter Green Chilled has created a new Warehouse Pick Manager position.

The manager will lead the picking team, allocate daily workloads and make sure customer orders leave accurately and on time. Responsibilities also include monitoring performance, training new staff and keeping an eye on productivity targets — all while avoiding the phrase "going forward" often enough to retain the goodwill of the team.

Previous warehouse leadership experience is required. The position covers 45 hours across five days in seven and includes a pension, life assurance, on-site parking and training opportunities.

Those happier with machinery than performance reviews could earn up to £46,500 plus overtime as a Workshop HGV Engineer in Evercreech.

The permanent position offers daytime shifts, further training and work across a mixed commercial fleet. It should suit somebody who hears an unpleasant mechanical noise and begins diagnosing it rather than quietly turning up the radio.

Healthcare professionals looking for shorter-term work can earn £50 an hour as a Locum Advanced Nurse Practitioner near Castle Cary.

The role covers several Mondays and Thursdays in January, supporting an established GP practice. At least the successful applicant will enter the new year already knowing which dates require more preparation than a hopeful glance at the diary.

A more flexible commitment is available at the Save the Children shop in Castle Cary, which needs new Shop Volunteers.

Volunteers might price donations, serve customers, arrange displays or organise the shop floor. No retail experience is required, full training is provided and people can offer anything from a couple of hours to a regular morning or afternoon each week.

The role is unpaid, with the shop raising money for the charity's work with children. It also provides regular opportunities to wonder who originally bought the ornamental ceramic duck and what finally persuaded them to let it go.

Finally, the government-funded Approach Social Work programme offers people from different professional backgrounds a route into children's social work.

No previous social work experience is required, although applicants need at least a 2:2 undergraduate degree and GCSE English at grade 4/C or above.

The three-year programme combines academic study with hands-on work supporting children and families. Participants receive an £18,000 or £20,000 tax-free bursary during the first year, followed by guaranteed local authority employment for those who complete it successfully.

Salaries are listed at between £30,000 and £39,000 in year two and up to £44,000 in year three. It is not a quick escape from an annoying manager, but it offers the chance to build a career where the work genuinely matters.
