Students at The Blue School in Wells are celebrating a strong set of GCSE results, with nearly a quarter of all grades awarded at grade 7 or above.

The school said indications also suggest the progress made by its Year 11 pupils is well above national benchmarks, while the vast majority are expected to return to The Blue School Sixth Form to continue their studies.

The results come on a day when hundreds of thousands of pupils across England, Wales and Northern Ireland are finding out how they performed in GCSEs and other qualifications.

Nationally, the overall proportion of GCSE entries achieving a standard pass of grade 4 or above has edged down again to 67.3%, while the share of top grades at 7 and above has risen slightly to around 22%. The gap between boys and girls has also narrowed to its smallest level since 2000.

At The Blue School, the proportion of top grades was higher than that overall national figure, with almost one in four results coming in at grades 7, 8 or 9.

Headteacher Mark Woodlock said the school was "immensely proud" of the cohort and the way pupils had approached one of the biggest milestones of their education.

He said: "Their maturity and dedication is reflected in this exceptional set of GCSE grades and that should give them a great sense of achievement. Gaining these grades provides them with a passport to fully access the next steps in their education and careers."

Mr Woodlock said the overall figures only told part of the story, with individual achievements across different subjects reflecting the work pupils had put in over several years.

He added: "Overall headlines hide the many individual stories that exist for students in all subjects. It is our privilege as a staff to work with these students to help them overcome the hurdles that have been placed in their way and set themselves up for the next phase in their lives."

The headteacher also thanked families, staff and others who had supported the pupils throughout their time at the school.

He said: "We congratulate them all on reaching this point with such grace and determination. We thank all of those, inside and outside school, who have supported these students during the last few years and who have helped them to fulfil their potential."

The Blue School, in Kennion Road, has more than 1,300 pupils on roll and serves Wells and the surrounding area.
