Wells bellringers launch £60,000 appeal for St Cuthbert’s
By Laura Linham 7th Oct 2026
Wells bellringers are seeking £60,000 in community donations to restore St Cuthbert's church bells and make them easier for new recruits to ring.
Wells Amateur Bellringing Society says the existing bells are difficult to handle, creating problems for its youngest and oldest members and making learning harder for beginners.
The Wells Bells Project would increase the number of bells from eight to ten by adding two lighter bells. Existing bells would be retuned, one that cannot be retuned would be replaced, and an updated frame would be installed.
Organisers plan to combine community fundraising with grant income. Their GoFundMe appeal had raised £4,299 from 75 donations when checked on Wednesday, 7 October.
The project also includes safety and access improvements within the belfry, allowing more tower tours for residents and schools.
Supporters can contribute towards individual components, including bell ropes, clappers and retuning. Larger sponsorship opportunities allow a donor's name, or that of a loved one, to be placed on selected items.
Donations and further details are available through the Wells Bells fundraising appeal.
