Wells athlete Elise wins Commonwealth silver
By Laura Linham 31st Jul 2026
Wells City Harriers are celebrating after Elise Thorner won silver in the 3000m steeplechase at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Elise, who began training with the Harriers when she was around eight, produced a personal best at Scotstoun Stadium to take the silver medal for Team England. The club said she chased down the medal with a storming final two laps.
Wells City Harriers said the performance left Elise just over a second behind the British record. The club posted its congratulations after the race, saying it was "so proud" of its former junior athlete.
Elise and her brother both started training with Wells City Harriers as children. She is now coached by Helen Clitheroe at New Balance Manchester.
There was still a strong Wells presence in Glasgow for the final. Her former Harriers coach Paul was at Scotstoun Stadium to cheer her over the line, along with Elise's family.
The family connection with the club continues today, with Elise's dad Al coaching the Harriers' junior training sessions on Monday evenings.
Wells City Harriers said: "Huge congratulations Elise."
