Wells Art Contemporary has announced its prizewinners as this year's exhibition opens at Wells Cathedral. Tiffany LaPlanche's "Traveler of Hüzün" has won the £2,000 Howden Art Award, while another prize remains in visitors' hands.
The Chubb Bulleid People's Choice Prize will award £500 to the artwork receiving the most public votes. Its winner will be announced at the end of the exhibition, which runs until Saturday, 7 November.
There is also recognition from the city's young art enthusiasts. The Blue School Interns Award has gone to Richard Kenton Webb's "Acknowledging English Iconoclasm – Contemplatives".
Myroslava Pavliuchenko's "Strawberry" received the Somerset Art Works Mentoring Prize, while Sharon Kelly's "Hidden Holds" won the St Cuthberts Mill Award. That award provides 20 sheets of Saunders Waterford paper, worth more than £120.
Erin Coppin's "Beach Museum II" won the Parker Harris Mentoring Prize. Both mentoring awards offer professional development support to their recipients.
Heather Jane Wallace's "A Bacchanal before the storm (after Nicholas Poussin)" received the £500 Jane Bowe Memorial Award. Annamarie Dzendrowskyj won the NG Art Creative Residency, offering a two-week placement in Provence with accommodation, studio space and mentorship.
Established in 2012, Wells Art Contemporary is a volunteer-led exhibition giving artists from around the world an opportunity to show their work at the Cathedral. This year's programme features 100 artworks and four community art projects supported by WAC.
The exhibition opened on Saturday, 10 October, following the announcement of its return earlier this autumn. Visitors can explore the work before deciding which piece deserves the public prize.
The winning artworks and full results are available on the organiser's website. Details of the People's Choice Prize are also available online.
