The Great Mendip Virtual Rugby Walk has raised more than £300 for St Margaret's Hospice.

The Great Mendip Rugby Walk was scheduled to take place in March, but like many events it was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The organisers Candlelight Care decided to make the event "virtual" during May to raise much-needed funds for the hospice, and asked participants to complete the 6.5-mile challenge while adhering to their daily exercise allowance.

Every person who took part received a certificate, and those who raised more than £40 in sponsorship also received a St Margaret's Hospice Care Virtual Challenge medal.

The chairman of Candlelight Care, Peter Lugg, said: "We were naturally disappointed that the Great Mendip Rugby Walk this year had to be postponed, as it is a great event which raises funds for a wonderful cause.

"By taking it virtual we were able to ensure that St Margaret's Hospice received some of the funding which it so desperately needs to continue providing its service during the pandemic.

"We will soon begin planning for the 2021 Great Mendip Rugby Walk, which will be bigger and better than ever."

In April, St Margaret's launched an emergency appeal to ensure that care and support is available to patients and their families across Somerset.

The charity's doctors, nurses and therapists are helping to shoulder the huge burden on the NHS across our community, as our country faces the biggest health crisis in living memory.

Ann Lee, CEO of St Margaret's, said: "We have been humbled at the response we have received from our local community and can't thank people enough.

"The Candlelight team came up with a wonderful way to still get people exercising and raising money when so many of our traditional events and campaigns are on hold."
