On a wintery day, sometimes there's nothing better to keep the cold and grey out than finding yourself in a comfy chair, with a cup of something hot and gently steaming in your hand while you take a trip down memory lane.

And this video - The Changing Shops of Wells in Photographs - couldn't be more perfect for such an occasion.

The film, created by the Wells and Mendip Museum in partnership with the Project Factory, Wells City Archives, Somerset Film and Wells Civic Society, shows the heart of the city of Wells and the businesses that helped to make it over the years.

Based on the Simes Map showing the city's heart in 1735, the photographs came from the Phillips Collection held by the museum, the Patrick Brown collection donated to the City Archive showing the buildings in the 1970s, and the Millennium photographs commissioned by the Wells Civic Society.

Featuring rarely-seen old photographs interposed with a few familiar faces sharing their memories of Wells, thoughts on how the city has changed over the years, and hopes for the future, it's a fascinating trip through time.

Did you know that Wells used to have two cinemas? Do you remember when the Wells Journal offices were in the High Street? How about the outdoor swimming pool or train station?

Take a look at Wells - how it was, the businesses we loved and lost and how the city's character has changed over the years.

The photographic collection will be used in future outreach learning with schools, residential homes, history groups and researchers.

The film was made by Somerset Film and funded by NLHF Search & Learn.
