For the first time in 650 years, the public is granted a rare chance to discover the hidden treasures of Vicars' Close, the oldest street in Europe, located in Wells, Somerset.
As part of the Discovering Vicars' Close program, a series of events have been organised to celebrate this remarkable site, with activities running from today until June 10th.
Thanks to a generous grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Wells Cathedral has embarked on a mission to conserve the unique architectural heritage of Vicars' Close and open selected buildings to the public. Guided tours will provide access to previously unseen spaces within the Close, offering an exclusive glimpse into its rich history.
The program features a range of fascinating events and activities for all ages. Medieval garden design will be explored in a captivating talk, while a dusk bat walk promises an enchanting experience. Children's workshops, themed around Vicars' Close, will be held during the half-term break, providing educational and entertaining sessions.
An esteemed highlight will be the opportunity to visit the Cathedral archives, where visitors can marvel at the original Charter signed by Edward III and a letter from the court of Elizabeth I, requesting the return of a Vicar Choral who had fallen victim to a broken voice and an insatiable appetite.
Crystal Johnson, the project manager said: "Vicars' Close is a truly amazing place with an incredible history. This is an opportunity not only to go behind the scenes and learn about our project plans but also to share your ideas and thoughts on the future of the Close."
To further enhance the visitor experience, a second-stage application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund will be submitted later this year, seeking £3.3 million for the conservation of all buildings in Vicars' Close and the creation of new visitor spaces to celebrate its heritage.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in a survey available at www.wellscathedral.org.uk/vicarsclose.
This valuable feedback will inform the plans for an enhanced visitor experience at Vicars' Close. By completing the survey, participants will have the chance to win two gold tier tickets worth £100 to this year's Carols by Candlelight concerts in Wells Cathedral.
Don't miss this unique opportunity to explore the captivating wonders of Vicars' Close and contribute to its exciting future.
