Time running out to apply for role as Wells’ next Town Crier

There's just days left to apply to be Wells' next Town Crier — and council chiefs are urging anyone with a booming voice and a love of local history to step forward before time runs out.
The voluntary role dates back to the 1300s and includes donning full traditional robes, ringing the crier's bell and delivering public announcements at events across the city. From markets and mayoral functions to royal visits and civic festivals, the successful candidate will become a familiar face — and voice — for residents and visitors alike.
Applicants must be confident speaking to crowds, able to perform in all weathers and comfortable wearing full regalia. A flair for performance and strong knowledge of Wells' heritage are considered major pluses.
The post falls under the Mayor's office and includes occasional travel to competitions and other civic events. While unpaid, the role comes with an honorarium and expenses.
Applications close on 30 September, with interviews set for 10 October.
