St Joseph and St Teresa Catholic Primary School in Wells has been rated 'Good' in all areas following its first Ofsted inspection, which took place on 3 and 4 December 2024.
Inspectors praised the school's high standards of education, strong leadership, and emphasis on personal development.
The report highlighted the school's welcoming and supportive environment, stating: "Pupils enjoy attending this school. They feel safe and well supported. The school's values contribute strongly to how well pupils conduct themselves." It added that pupils are "calm, courteous and welcoming" and that "bullying is uncommon and is not tolerated."
The curriculum was described as "broad and ambitious," with teachers demonstrating strong subject knowledge and ensuring pupils revisit previous learning to build on their knowledge. Inspectors noted that "pupils read widely and often because reading is at the heart of the curriculum," with early years children showing "a huge enthusiasm for reading."
Leadership at the school was commended for fostering high aspirations among pupils, stating: "The school's approach to linking careers to the curriculum raises pupils' aspirations and inspires them." Inspectors also highlighted the school's focus on character development through outdoor education, community involvement, and public speaking opportunities.
Parents and carers were described as having strong relationships with the school, with the report noting: "Parents find staff approachable and welcoming. Communication with parents is strong."
While the school was praised in many areas, inspectors identified a need to ensure some learning activities better account for pupils' starting points to help deepen their understanding. The report also recommended quicker and more consistent action in addressing areas for improvement, stating: "Occasionally, the school does not take prompt enough action when areas of further development are identified."
Safeguarding measures were judged as effective, with inspectors highlighting that pupils are taught how to stay safe online and maintain their mental and physical health.
