September is shaping up to be a lively month across Wells, Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury and Street, with everything from antiques fairs and paddleboarding to soul music and rocket science! Whether you're a history buff, a music lover, or just looking for something fun to do with the family, there's plenty going on. Here's a round-up of what's coming up – and in date order, of course!

Kicking things off in Wells on Friday, 13th September, you can dive into some literal rocket science! If you've ever wondered about spacecraft propulsion (who hasn't?), head over to Wells & Mendip Museum where James Lambert from Pulsar Fusion will be giving a talk on how the space industry is changing. He'll cover the history of his company and its pioneering work in space propulsion. If you're into science or just curious about what's happening in space, this is a talk not to be missed. Tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for students. More details here.

But that's just the start of a busy weekend. Friday also marks the return of the West Country's biggest antique and collectors fair at the Bath & West Showground in Shepton Mallet. Running from 13th to 15th September, this fair is a must for lovers of all things vintage. With 600 stands featuring everything from vintage teddies to fine china and collectible coins, you're bound to stumble across a treasure or two. Friday entry is £10 (which also covers Saturday and Sunday), or £5 if you're heading over for the weekend. It's perfect for browsing, bartering, and adding a touch of charm to your home. Find more information here.

Moving into Saturday, 14th September, Shepton Mallet will host a couple of creative and fun-filled events. Start your day with a touch of creativity at the 'Found' Poetry Art Workshop at Shepton Mallet Library. From 10:30 am, you can experiment with creating poetry using recycled words from old books and newspapers. It's a quirky way to get your literary juices flowing, and it's eco-friendly too! All materials are provided, and there's no need to be a poetry whiz to enjoy it. A £7 donation will secure your spot in this unique workshop. Sign up here.

Later that evening, why not round off your day at the Art Bank with a boogie to some Northern Soul? Hip City Classic Soul is bringing the sounds of Wigan Casino and Blackpool Mecca to Shepton Mallet. DJs Dave, Jorge, and Steve will be spinning original vinyl 45s to keep the night groovy. Tickets are £3 for one or £5 for two, and the party kicks off at 7 pm. Tickets are available here.

Also on the 14th, Glastonbury will see a brand-new event called FleeceFest at the Red Brick Building. This youth-led mini-festival celebrates Glastonbury's heritage and runs from 11 am to 4 pm. It's free to attend and promises a day packed with creativity, live music, and local food. Visitors can try their hand at sheepskin crafts, design their own badges, and help paint a community mural. If you're after a family-friendly day out, FleeceFest has something for everyone. Find out more here.

For those of you feeling a bit more adventurous, why not head to Bath for The Big Avon Paddle? Taking place on the River Avon, this fun-filled paddleboarding event is raising money for Dorothy House Hospice. There are two routes to choose from – a 1.5-mile fun loop or a 4.5-mile loop – and participants are encouraged to dress up as pirates for the day. Who doesn't want to be a pirate while paddleboarding? Every participant gets a finisher's medal and pizza at the end of the day. It's a splash-tastic way to spend your Saturday while supporting a great cause. Learn more here.

On Sunday, 15th September, head to St John's Church in Glastonbury for the Battle of Britain Service. This service commemorates the 84th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and will include a wreath-laying ceremony and refreshments afterwards. Local dignitaries, RAF cadets, and members of the public are welcome to attend and pay their respects. For more information, visit here.

If you're a fan of courtroom drama, don't miss Agatha Christie's Witness for the Prosecution at Wells Little Theatre, running from 16th to 21st September. This gripping murder mystery will keep you on the edge of your seat as the story unfolds. Will Leonard Vole be able to prove his innocence? Only time – and the jury – will tell. Get your tickets early here.

Now, for some future dates at Studio 24 in Wells. On 27th September, The Killers Kollective will take the stage for an electrifying tribute show to The Killers. Expect to hear all the classics, from "Mr. Brightside" to "Somebody Told Me." It's bound to be a night of pure indie rock joy. Looking ahead, mark your calendars for 11th October, when Studio 24 will host Arrival – The Hits of ABBA. Whether you're a "Dancing Queen" or just want to shout "Mamma Mia," this tribute show promises to bring all the ABBA magic you love to life. Tickets for both events are available here.

With so much happening this month, there's no shortage of ways to get out and enjoy Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury, Street, and Wells. Whether you're hunting for antiques, learning poetry, or paddleboarding like a pirate, there's something for everyone. So grab your diary, mark down these dates, and make the most of what September has to offer!
