Wookey Hole village celebrates autumn with witch scarecrow trail
Residents of Wookey Hole have filled the village with autumnal spirit as they launch their second annual witch scarecrow trail, a community event that sees the lanes lined with 25 uniquely crafted scarecrows.
Each scarecrow, designed by locals, brings a touch of seasonal fun as visitors wind their way through the village.
The idea for the event first came from a Wookey Hole Residents Forum coffee morning, where villagers suggested an activity linked to the village's legendary witch, said to have lived in the famous caves over a thousand years ago.
Jo Plimmer, from the Residents Forum, explained, "The idea for the witchy scarecrow trail came from a village coffee morning a couple of years ago… it seemed a great idea to connect with that story and give the village an opportunity to unleash its creative spirit. We were bowled over by the response last year, and how local businesses like Wookey Hole Caves, Wookey Hole Inn, and Souldough Pizza have got behind the project by offering great prizes."
The scarecrows range from flying witches and spooky crones to crocheted and recycled creations, reflecting the creativity and humour of the community. Each entry is part of a friendly competition that will be judged on Sunday, 3 November, by the Wookey Hole Witch herself. Prizes include a family weekend break at Mendip Hot Tub Lodges, a meal for two at Wookey Hole Inn, and a family voucher from Souldough Pizza.
The scarecrow trail is open for visitors until Monday, 4 November, and everyone is welcome to come along. A trail map can be found on the Wookey Hole village website, and visitors are encouraged to share their photos and experiences on social media using #WookeyHoleWitchTrail.
For those visiting on Saturday, 2 November, the Wookey Hole Club will host its monthly coffee morning from 10.30 a.m. to 1.00 p.m., serving seasonal treats to fuel explorers on the trail.
