People across Somerset are being urged to give local businesses a boost this spring by shopping and eating locally where they can.

Somerset Council is encouraging residents and visitors to support pubs, cafés, delis, groceries and arts and craft centres across the county as firms look ahead to the Easter holidays after a difficult winter.

Councillor Mike Rigby, Somerset Council's lead member for economic development, planning and assets, said backing local businesses was vital for the county's economy and for keeping communities strong.

He said: "It's been a tough winter with some businesses affected by flooding but now, with the Easter holidays on the horizon, along with the prospect of longer, sunnier days, it's the ideal time to explore what's on offer locally.

"We need our local businesses and they need us, it's about having healthy, connected communities and recognising what we have.

"We are lucky to have some brilliant local businesses, markets, attractions and leisure offerings across the county, and now's the ideal time to get out there and rediscover what's on your own doorstep."

Cllr Rigby said supporting Somerset firms could be as simple as picking up supplies for a picnic, enjoying a pub meal or heading out for a walk along the Somerset stretch of the King Charles III Coast Path.

He also urged people to consider using public transport, adding that single bus fares cost £3 and that the Exmoor Explorer bus will run again this summer, making trips to Porlock and the hills easier and more affordable.

The council is also asking people to spread the message in their own communities and encourage visitors to explore Somerset's heritage, hospitality and independent businesses.

More ideas for day trips, longer stays and visitor attractions are available through Visit Somerset and Visit Exmoor, which both promote destinations and businesses across the county.
