Snow and Ice warning issued for Mendip

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for ice and snow in Mendip, running from midnight tonight (March 6) until 11.59pm on Wednesday (March 8).

It said snow or ice could cause road delays and rail and plane cancellations. It also warned of the risk of slips and falls on icy surfaces.

While the warning has been issued, it looks as if we'll escape from the worst of the incoming back weather - the heaviest and most frequent snow will strike Scotland and the North East but widespread snow is forecast across the country with the UK Health Security Agency issuing a level 2 cold weather alert which is in place for the whole of England.

The Met Office warns snow will reach Bath, Weston-super-Mare, Taunton, Wells, Chard, Yeovil and Bridport at varying times tomorrow, but Dulverton and other areas on Exmoor could see wintry showers from 4am tomorrow until 5am on Wednesday (March 8).

But it's only areas on higher ground such as Exmoor, the Quantock Hills and the Blackdown Hills that are expected to see significant levels of snow.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Almond said: "With freezing overnight temperatures and the risk of ice, there's a risk of some travel disruption and wintry hazards are likely to persist through much of next week, even further south for a time. So watch the Met Office forecast for the latest information."

Earlier alerts issued by the UK Health Security Agency remain in place. These warn that all of England will likely experience cold weather for much of next week.

The agency said this could have a "serious impact" on the health of those vulnerable to cold weather, and urged people to check on relatives.

It advised over-65s, or those with pre-existing medical conditions, to heat their homes to at least 18C.
