A grassroots campaign to build a new destination skatepark in Wells has hit its first major milestone – and organisers say it's just the beginning of something that will benefit young people across the whole of Mendip.

The Wells Skatepark Project has raised more than £5,000 in the opening weeks of its Crowdfunder, with backing from over 60 supporters. The planned skatepark, next to The Blue School, is designed to serve not just Wells, but also Street, Glastonbury, Shepton Mallet and surrounding villages – providing a free, safe and accessible space for people of all ages and abilities.

"This is a community-led project, and the early support has been incredible," said Beverley Smith, trustee of the Wells Skatepark Project. "It's not just about the money – it's about showing major funders that the people of this area want and need this."

Local businesses and individuals have already rallied around the campaign, with donations from The Square Play Centre, Glenavon Technology, Kingdom Training Gym, The Mayor of Wells Louis Agabani, and Wolf Barbers. Tech YouTuber Tom "The Tech Chap" also chipped in, while a fundraiser at The King Arthur by DJ collective 3SEVEN6 brought in more cash. Young skater Bassy even collected £15 from his neighbours to support the cause.

The project aims to create a modern concrete skatepark that can be used by skaters, scooter riders, BMXers and anyone on wheels, encouraging exercise, confidence, and intergenerational connection. Organisers say the finished park will become a major local asset and a destination for visitors from across the district.

To encourage wider support, the team has launched a "Make Your Mark on the Park" sponsorship scheme – with permanent recognition on the main ramp for donations of £250 or more.

"Whether you're a parent, a skater, a local business or just someone who believes in creating opportunities for young people, we'd love your support," Smith added.
