Sizzling writers with fingers on the pulse at the 2019 Wells Festival of Literature

Politics are incendiary at the moment and Wells Festival of Literature writers are figuring consistently on radio, television, and news feeds since the supreme court judgement that Parliament must be re-opened.

Book tickets promptly to share the fireworks from five commentators whose voices are on our airwaves.

On both television, radio and internet, Vernon Bogdanor and Peter Hennessy seem to be taking differing positions on our constitution – Peter Hennessy calls for a written constitution to keep us safe from the whims of leaders.

Vernon Bogdanor feels it is a parliamentary crisis – MPs not doing their job. Has the "Good Chap" theory of government, which maintained some stability in the UK through the 20th century, begun to fray?

More news - well known podcaster and frontman for Radio 4's The Week in Westminster, Steve Richards has stepped into the breach opened by the, much regretted, withdrawal of Kamal Ahmed from the festival.

Steve's recent book, The Prime Ministers: Reflections on Leadership from Wilson to May, brought sparks to the "Good Chap" theory in a lively discussion on BBC Radio 4's Start the Week recently.

Catch him on Saturday October 19 at 7.30pm when tickets for Kamal Ahmed's event will be valid. Alternately ticket-holders can get a full refund.

Finally, Saudi Arabia seems to keep cropping up in the news. You may have forgotten the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Arabian embassy but, after the recent bombing of the Saudi oil fields and questions over the safety of whistle-blowers in the Trump Ukraine affair, Jonathan Rugman's book The Killing in the Consulate is very topical.

BAFTA winner Jonathan is Channel 4's foreign affairs correspondent - he has reported from revolutions and uprisings in Syria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Bahrain, covered Somalia's famine, the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean, terrorist attacks in Paris, corruption in world football and the Haiti earthquake.
