Primary pupils urged to take part in 2025 Summer Reading Challenge

Somerset Council is encouraging children aged 4 to 11 to take part in this year's Summer Reading Challenge, which launched across the county's libraries this month.
The 2025 challenge, organised by The Reading Agency, is themed 'Story Garden: Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors'. It invites young readers to explore books inspired by the natural world while collecting rewards for completing six reads over the summer.
Children can sign up at their local library and will receive free activity packs, access to themed events, and a specially selected collection of books. Those who complete the challenge will receive a medal.
The campaign features artwork by illustrator Dapo Adeola and marks the 26th year of the reading initiative, which aims to maintain children's reading habits during the school break.
Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, Somerset Council's Lead Member for Communities, said: "This is a fantastic way to encourage more children to pick up a book and discover how reading can entertain and inspire."
Karen Napier, CEO of The Reading Agency, added: "Story Garden will create magical spaces where children can explore and be curious, combining the joy of reading with the proven wellbeing benefits of connecting with nature."
Last year, the challenge reached nearly 600,000 children and led to over 100,000 new library memberships. The scheme is free to join and delivered through public libraries nationwide.
Further details and a list of participating libraries are available at Summer Reading Challenge 2025.
