Poundland to close Wells store in August as part of national restructuring plan

Poundland has confirmed that its store on High Street in Wells will close permanently on Sunday, 24 August 2025.
The announcement is part of the retailer's ongoing restructuring and recovery plan, which aims to reduce its UK store network and stabilise the business.
The Wells store is one of 12 additional closures announced this month, joining 25 other locations already scheduled to shut in August.
The latest list also includes shops in Coventry, Birmingham, Peterborough, Canterbury, Salford, and Whitechapel.
A Poundland spokesperson said: "Colleagues at these locations earmarked for closure under the recovery plan were informed of their store's status in June. And Poundland has this week completed briefing colleagues on a specific closing date for these 12 sites."
The company said its restructuring strategy, announced in June, is designed to make the business "financially sustainable" and will involve closing 68 stores in total. Other shops will be closed as leases expire, reducing the retailer's footprint from around 800 stores to between 650 and 700.
Darren MacDonald, Poundland's retail director, described the closures as "regrettable" but necessary. He said: "While our anticipated network of around 650 to 700 stores remains sizeable, it is of course, sincerely regrettable that we're closing a number of stores to allow us to get us back on track."
Work is ongoing to consult with affected staff and explore possible alternative roles within the company.
The closures are part of a court-sanctioned process affecting UK creditors. Poundland operations in the Republic of Ireland and Isle of Man, trading as Dealz, are not impacted.
The Wells branch, located at 27-29 High Street, has been a familiar presence in the city centre, but will cease trading in less than a month as the national restructure progresses.
