The Wells Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), in collaboration with Somerset Council, is setting its sights on a major upgrade of CCTV systems across Wells.

This initiative is in response to the escalating number of shoplifting incidents that have rattled the local community and business owners.

The trend of thefts in local stores, occasionally resulting in injuries to staff, has compelled the Wells policing team to issue a crucial safety notice to retail employees.

A police spokesperson said: "We urge shop workers to take utmost care of their safety. Confronting a suspected shoplifter should only be done if it poses no risk."

In an immediate response to these concerns, the neighbourhood policing team has ramped up patrols in commercial areas and is ensuring better communication between shopkeepers and law enforcement by distributing essential contact information.

The focus, however, is swiftly shifting towards enhancing surveillance capabilities.

"In a strategic move with Somerset Council, we are looking at the possibility of significantly upgrading CCTV surveillance in Wells. This will not only serve as a theft deterrent but will also facilitate swifter response to any untoward incidents," the spokesperson continued.

In case of emergencies, shop workers are reminded to dial 999 without delay.
