Residents and businesses in Wells, have expressed concerns over a perceived increase in antisocial behaviour in the city.

Reports of drunkenness, homelessness, and gatherings of youths in areas such as Cathedral Green, Market Place, the High Street and nearby supermarkets have caused alarm among locals.

In February this year - the most recent crime figures available - there were 60 crimes reported. This is marginally up from the 54 crimes reported in January.

Of the crimes reported in February, there were 19 classed as violent or sexual offences.

The category of violent crimes, as defined by the police, includes a range of offences from minor offences such as harassment and common assault to serious offences such as murder, actual bodily harm and grievous bodily harm. Sexual offences include Indecent Assault and Unlawful (under age) Sexual Intercourse, as well as sexual assault, rape and Indecent exposure.

There were also 10 reports of public order offences - acts of violence or intimidation in public, eight of theft and seven of criminal damage or arson.

To address these concerns, neighbourhood officers have increased patrols in these areas and actively engaged with residents, businesses, and tourists. The aim is to establish positive relations with the local community to create safer and stronger neighbourhoods.

A spokesperson for the local police team said: "Wells is a very safe place to live, work and visit and has a relatively low rate of reported crime per head of population, and – by continually reviewing where criminal offences are taking place to target patrols, and working closely with partner agencies - we are determined to keep it that way.

"Antisocial behaviour can significantly impact individuals and communities, so it is important to take steps to address it. We urge anyone who witnesses or experiences antisocial behaviour to report it immediately on 101 to help maintain a safe and enjoyable environment for all."

"We will continue to patrol these locations and deal positively while supporting individuals in need with any of these incidents."
