Padfield and Robertson star as Wells City triumph over Almondsbury
Ross Padfield and Ben Robertson were the stars as Wells City ground out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Almondsbury.
In the first minute Almondsbury's Penrose shot from a tight angle, which just went wide.
After 11 minutes, Almondsbury's Sheppard did well to win the ball back and put a dangerous cross into the Wells box - the initial ball was only half cleared to Williams whose shot again narrowly went wide.
The first chance for Wells was on 20 minutes when a Harry Foster free kick was deflected wide with calls for handball waved away by the ref.
On 27 minutes a fierce strike from Brett Cotterill from 25 yards was brilliantly tipped wide when it looked destined for the bottom left corner.
After 29 minutes, there was another effort for Wells but this time Craig Herrod narrowly cleared the crossbar leaving the score 0-0 at half time.
The first real action of the second half was on 51 minutes when dangerous play by Almondsbury's Penrose saw him ride three challenges in the Wells box before his pull back was hooked clear by Robertson.
Wells scored the only goal of the game on 68 minutes when, following a brilliant ball into the box by Wells' Kieran Davis, Foster's shot was fumbled and Padfield was quickest to react and smash the ball into the top right corner of the net.
Wells were unlucky not to score a second on 80 minutes when Herrod drove into the Almondsbury box and forced a good save from Lane - the ball came out to Foster and his shot somehow hit Lane again before hitting the post and going out for a corner.
Wells then had a goal disallowed on 82 minutes as Alex Camm lobbed the keeper from the edge of the box but the ball came back off the crossbar with Foster tucking away the rebound but he was adjudged offside.
In the final minute, Foster turned on the afterburners and from inside his own half and he flew past an Almondsbury defender before seeing his low effort brilliantly saved by Lane low to his right, leaving the final score Wells City 1-0 Almondsbury.
This was a hard fought win for Wells but on the balance of play and chances created, it was a deserved three points.
Next up Wells entertain top of the table Longwell Green with a 3pm kick off before another home game on Boxing Day, against Bishop Sutton, with a 1pm kick off.
