Night buses: Successful trial would mean night buses return to Wells

Night buses returning to parts of Somerset and a successful trial in other parts of the county could see them returning to Wells.

The initiative, which launches later this month, will see a series of night buses rolled out across the county, serving areas including Taunton, Minehead, Chard, Bridgwater and Wellington. It will see buses run until 11.15pm at night in some areas, with Taunton acting as the main hub.

And while there's nothing in our area just yet, if the trial is successful, the county council hopes to roll the services out to Wells, Shepton Mallet and Yeovil, too.

Somerset County Council executive lead for transport and digital, Councillor Mike Rigby, said: "Sadly, we cannot run a night bus service everywhere as we do not have enough funding. But the new services will run out of a Taunton hub and radiate out to areas including Minehead, Bridgwater, Chard and Wellington.

"If the service proves commercially viable then we hope to eventually expand the initiative. It's all about connecting up the towns for just a £2 bus fare."

"If successful, we are keen to look at rolling services out to other areas, including Yeovil, Wells and Shepton Mallet."

"We hope the services will be well used," said Councillor Rigby. "We cannot just keep making spaces for cars and need to make buses more accessible over a longer period of time."

The full timetable for services can be found here.
