New wine bar to open in Wells as Courtyard Restaurant closes after 16 years

A popular family-run restaurant in Wells has shut its doors after 16 years – but locals won't have to wait long for something new to take its place.
The Courtyard Restaurant, tucked away in the Heritage Courtyard just off the city centre, has served its final Sunday roast as owners Steve and Julie Childs say farewell to the business they've poured their lives into.
In an emotional goodbye, the couple thanked their regulars, staff, friends and family for their support over the years. "Today marks a new chapter in our lives," they said. "We've had many happy memories here at The Courtyard."
But it's not the end for the space – because a brand new venue is moving in.
Sadlers Wine Bar and Lounge is the brainchild of Jason Roland Windcock, who's already hard at work transforming the restaurant into a modern spot to relax, drink and dine. And he's keen to keep things local – stocking up on Somerset cheeses, meats, olives and more.
Jason confirmed he picked up the keys at the end of March and has just days to get the venue ready for a special V.I.P. business launch.
And he's bringing in some star power too – with celebrity chef Lesley Waters, of Ready Steady Cook and This Morning fame, lined up to open the launch event on Thursday, April 17.
The official opening date for Sadlers hasn't been confirmed yet – but excitement is already building.
Jobs are being advertised online, the paint's barely dry, and Jason says: "We're slowly moving forward to opening."
Sadlers Wine Bar and Lounge will open soon at 9 Heritage Courtyard, Wells.
