A newly established walking group in Wells aims to support men throughout Somerset in tackling mental health challenges.

This initiative is part of Men Walking and Talking, a broader movement that has rapidly expanded since its inception in 2021 by Dan Reid. The Wells chapter is led by Nathan, a law lecturer and newcomer to Somerset, who was inspired to start the group following his personal experiences with addiction and depression.

Nathan sees the walks as a valuable opportunity for social connection, exercise, and mental health support. "Creating a social context helps people feel at ease and willing to share their feelings," he said. "It breaks down the echo chambers that men sometimes find themselves in."

The group meets outside St Cuthbert's Church every Monday at 7 pm. From there, participants enjoy a picturesque walk around Wells, passing landmarks like the Bishop's Palace and the moat. Newcomers are welcome to attend without prior notification, although they can contact Nathan in advance if they wish.

In addition to the weekly walks, Nathan has set up a WhatsApp group to keep the community engaged and supportive outside of their meetings. "People have been discussing their struggles and concerns," he noted.

Though still in its early stages, Nathan is optimistic about the Wells group's potential impact and growing attendance. "Mental health affects not only the body but also the mind and people's self-confidence," he emphasised.

Men Walking and Talking now boasts 17 groups across five counties, with Wells being the latest addition. Nathan hopes that the initiative will continue to grow, providing men with a supportive environment to discuss their mental health openly.
