Ever wondered about the women who have shaped Wells and its rich history, but rarely had their contributions acknowledged?

On 20 November, a new book by Helen Pugh, 'Unsung Women in Somerset,' aims to set the record straight, with specific chapters dedicated to the women of Wells.

Uniquely focussed on the feminine figures who have significantly impacted Somerset's past, the book takes readers on a journey from pre-Roman to contemporary times.

Each chapter offers a blend of narrative and historical notes, showcasing the rigorous research into the work. A 'Quick Tribute' section in each chapter also nods to other influential women from the same period, painting a fuller picture of Somerset's history.

Among the intriguing topics covered in the book are the founding of Wells' first-ever church, female landownership in Wells, historical burials in Wells Cathedral, and the stories of two Second World War air force women from Wells.

These chapters offer valuable local insights, ensuring that the book will be fascinating for Wells' residents and anyone interested in Somerset's history.

Helen Pugh, the author, has deep roots in Somerset. After growing up in Chilcompton and studying in Bath and Bristol, she spent eight years living abroad before returning to Somerset in 2018. Now residing in Midsomer Norton, Helen is currently working on a junior edition of the book.

'Unsung Women in Somerset' will be available in various formats: paperback, hardback, and ebook. The ebook is up for pre-order here: https://books2read.com/unsung.
