Due to high demand and a critical need for assistance, National Grid has announced an extension of its Community Matters Winter Fund deadline to 10th November.

The energy company has also increased the fund to £5 million to ensure that more community groups in Wells can apply for support in tackling fuel poverty this winter.

Since its inception in 2021, the Community Matters Fund has aided more than 900 grassroots organisations in response to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. The latest funding phase is now inviting charities, councils, and community groups in Wells to apply for grants up to £10,000. These grants aim to support projects focused on energy savings, warming homes, and providing warm community spaces.

Chris Hayton, director of corporate affairs at National Grid Electricity Distribution, remarked, "Unfortunately, many families will be struggling to keep their homes warm this winter, which is why I'm pleased we have been able to increase the amount of support available."

He further added that the fund would provide a lifeline for the most vulnerable by offering energy-saving advice and other initiatives to improve overall well-being and community resilience. Support will focus on areas such as energy tariff advice, heating solutions for those in fuel poverty, and the provision of warm packs to vulnerable households, among others.

Local charities, community groups, and authorities are eligible to apply for this funding. The application form can be found at www.nationalgrid.co.uk/community-matters-fund.
