for the residents of Wells, business owners and people commuting in and out of the city, it feels like barely a week goes by without a new set of temporary traffic lights going up.

With its streets already awash in construction due to a traffic light replacement programme, the city of Wells braces for yet another round of roadworks.

This time, it's Wales & West Utilities launching an essential operation to upgrade gas pipes, promising more disruption but necessary for a safe and reliable gas supply.

Despite the ongoing traffic inconveniences, the recent work by Wales & West Utilities is crucial to ensure the safe and uninterrupted flow of gas that powers local homes and businesses.

However, the planned road management will undoubtedly add to the mounting strain felt by residents, business owners and commuters alike.

In coordination with Somerset County Council, the following traffic alterations have been announced:

  • A closure of St Cuthbert Street from its intersection with Portway to its junction with Priest Row, effective from July 3 to August 25.
  • A one-way system on High Street, to be reversed between Priest Row and Queen Street, from August 29 to October 13.
  • A shutdown of Priest Row, from its junction with High Street to its intersection with Chamberlain Street, from August 29 to October 13.

While access will be maintained for residents and emergency vehicles, motorists are advised to anticipate delays and factor in additional travel time.

Simon Lee of Wales & West Utilities, who is overseeing this project, said:

"While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of people across Wells. Whether it's heating your home, making the family dinner or having a hot bath, we understand how important it is for your gas supply to be safe and reliable and there when you need it."

He acknowledged the inconvenience, adding, "We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it really is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future. We'll have a team of gas engineers on site throughout the project to make sure our work is completed as safely and as quickly as possible while keeping disruption to a minimum.

"This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport hydrogen and biomethane, so we can all play our part in a green future."

Wales & West Utilities' Customer Service Team is available to answer any queries regarding the work on their freephone number 0800 912 2999.
