Mendip District Council has announced that it will plant 100 trees in Wells to tackle climate change, encourage wildlife and enhance the local environment.

A combination of beech, hazel, field maple and oak saplings will be used in the green scheme at land off Tor Hill Lane in Wells, to help replace tree stocks due to natural loss.

The 100 trees have been gifted to the council by their grounds and maintenance contractor Idverde, which is celebrating 100 years in business.

Planting the "tree whips" - which are each approximately 60cm in height - will begin immediately at the Wells beauty spot, popular with walkers and a natural haven for wildlife.

The initiative coincides with National Tree Week, which is running from November 23 to December 1.

Haylee Wilkins, neighbourhood services group manager for Mendip, said: "We are delighted with the generous tree donation our maintenance contractors, Idverde, have kindly gifted to us.

"Trees transform the landscape, and these saplings will go a long way to help recoup the natural tree loss in the district over time, as well as helping climate change and nature to recover."

A spokesperson from Idverde said: "We work exclusively in the creation and maintenance of landscapes.

"So, together with clients like Mendip, we have the potential to make a real difference to climate resilience, carbon mitigation and biodiversity."

The council is actively exploring other locations across the district suitable for green initiatives, and are in conversations with experts at the Woodland Trust to determine the most appropriate species of trees and planting schemes to embark on.
