Major Wells city centre road closures begin Monday

Two busy roads in the centre of Wells will be closed to all traffic from Monday (31 March) as part of a major gas main upgrade.
Somerset Council has confirmed that Queen Street and part of High Street will be closed for more than a month to allow Wales & West Utilities to carry out essential infrastructure works.
The works are expected to take 33 days, with the roads closed 24 hours a day from Monday 31 March to Friday 2 May 2025.
Although the legal order came into effect on 27 March, restrictions will only be enforced once signage is in place.
The closure affects:
- Queen Street – from its junction with High Street, extending 72 metres southwards
- High Street – from the junction with Queen Street, 19 metres westwards and 16 metres eastwards
That's 107 metres of continuous closure in total.
A spokesperson for Somerset Council said the works were necessary to maintain the safety and reliability of the gas network in the area and advised drivers to plan ahead.
Diversion routes will be signposted, and full details – including maps – are available via one.network.
Anyone with questions about the works can contact Wales & West Utilities on 0800 912 2999, quoting reference ttro719211E.
