Road closures on Queen Street and High Street, Wells, from 27 March to 2 May for essential gas works.

Two busy roads in the centre of Wells will be closed to all traffic this spring as part of a major gas main upgrade.

Somerset Council has confirmed that Queen Street and parts of High Street will shut from Monday 31 March to Friday 2 May 2025, while Wales & West Utilities carry out essential infrastructure works. The closure is expected to last 33 days, operating 24 hours a day.

The legal order behind the closure comes into effect on 27 March, but restrictions will only be enforced when signs are in place.

The closure affects:

  • Queen Street – from the junction with High Street, extending 72 metres southwards
  • High Street – from the junction with Queen Street, 19 metres westwards and 16 metres eastwards

That's 107 metres of continuous closure in total.

A Somerset Council spokesperson confirmed the works are necessary to maintain the safety and reliability of the gas network in the area.

Drivers are advised to plan ahead and follow signed diversion routes. More information, including maps of the affected area and suggested routes, is available at one.network. Viewers looking more than two weeks ahead will need to register for a free account.
