A huge new knitting exhibition is set to take over Wells Cathedral — and it's packed with scenes from Britain's wartime past.

The Longest Yarn 2 – Britain at War will be on display from 29 April to 10 May 2025, giving visitors the chance to see the incredible handiwork on VE Day itself.

The exhibition features 15 panels of knitted and crocheted scenes, all created by volunteers from across the UK (and beyond), bringing to life memories and stories from the Second World War.

It's the follow-up to The Longest Yarn — a hugely popular display of D-Day scenes that was seen by thousands before heading off on tour to America.

Now, organiser Tansy Forster is back — and bringing a whole new set of woolly wonders to Wells.

She said: "We're amazed at the incredible amount of people who have seen The Longest Yarn, so now that it is touring America, we couldn't wait to create a second set of scenes, called The Longest Yarn 2, which depict Britain during wartime, and feature memories and stories gathered by our team.

"We're so pleased to start our journey with this exhibition at the beautiful Wells Cathedral."

Dean of Wells Cathedral, The Very Reverend Toby Wright, said the team were looking forward to welcoming visitors.

He said: "The Cathedral is steeped in history, and we're pleased to host the exhibition to showcase the stories of Britain during wartime, which will no doubt allow every visitor the opportunity to reflect on the strength shown by our communities at that time."

The exhibition is included with a Cathedral entry ticket — and that ticket gives visitors free returns for a whole year.
