The Somerset Wildlife Trust is inviting residents of Wells to participate in the Fantastic Fungi Focus event, scheduled from Friday 27th October to Sunday 29th October.

This citizen science initiative aims to gather crucial data on the variety and abundance of fungi species around the area.

As part of the Trust's ongoing Great Somerset Wildlife Count project, the Fantastic Fungi Focus follows several other successful counts conducted this year, including the Frog & Toad Spawn Count, the Big Count 2023, and the Hedgehog Count. The event encourages locals to venture into nearby woodlands to observe and document the fungi they encounter.

Fungi play a pivotal role in maintaining the health of our ecosystems. They help recycle nutrients from decaying organic matter and offer food and shelter to various animal species. Understanding their distribution can offer valuable insights into the health of our local woodlands. By participating in this event, you'll be contributing to significant scientific studies that inform future conservation efforts in Somerset.

This event is not only a great way to contribute to conservation efforts but also an opportunity to spend some quality time outdoors during the half term. So, grab your warm clothing and explore the woodlands for fungi specimens!

Interested individuals can sign up and download a free spotter guide on the Somerset Wildlife Trust website: www.somersetwildlife.org/fantastic-fungi-focus.
