There's a decent spread of vacancies doing the rounds this week, whether you're actively looking, vaguely curious, or just having one of those days where updating LinkedIn suddenly feels like a reasonable use of your lunch break.

Across the patch there are jobs in driving, education, engineering, retail, finance, HR, hospitality and construction, with everything from a few hours a week to full-time roles paying well into the £50,000s. There are permanent jobs, temporary contracts, flexible shifts and a couple of roles that require qualifications rather more serious than "good with people".

So, whether you're after a complete change, a bit more money, fewer meetings, more meetings for some reason, or just want to see what's out there, here are some of the local vacancies worth a look this week.

Early starts, open roads and jobs for people who quite like being out and about

If being tied to the same desk five days a week sounds increasingly unappealing, Just Eat is looking for Delivery Riders using a car in Glastonbury. It's self-employed, flexible work with weekly pay, and there's no previous delivery experience required. You'll need to be 18 or over, have a smartphone and access to a suitable vehicle with the right licence and insurance. Beyond that, a working knowledge of which Glastonbury roads become mysteriously impossible at certain times probably won't hurt.

There's another early-hours option in Street, where Morning Delivery Drivers are wanted by News Team Group to get newspapers and magazines to homes and businesses. It's self-employed work, and one for those rare people who can be trusted with both a vehicle and coherent thought before breakfast.

Sticking with the road, a Driver Rep is being recruited in Glastonbury. This is a full-time role visiting customers at pre-arranged appointments, taking measurements, carrying out surveys and showing product samples. There's no cold calling or canvassing involved, which immediately improves matters for anyone whose soul leaves their body at the words "door-to-door sales".

And if your licence is a bit more substantial, there's a Class 2 Driver opportunity linked to Glastonbury, with ongoing work, weekly pay and training to move into tipper and mixer driving. It's being pitched as a temp-to-perm opportunity, so could suit an experienced driver after something steadier than hopping between short-term jobs.

Shoes, screens and keeping Street's best-known export online

There are a couple of sizeable jobs at Clarks in Street this week, including an eCommerce Visual Merchandiser. The job involves running the UK and Ireland digital trading plan, keeping the website in shape, analysing how customers move around it and working out how to turn more browsing into buying. So, broadly, making sure people looking for a pair of Wallabees don't disappear into an online maze and give up.

Clarks is also looking for a Head of Marketing for the UK, Ireland and EMEA on a maternity-cover contract of up to 12 months. It's a senior role leading regional marketing strategy and campaigns across digital, retail, PR, ecommerce and wholesale, while translating the global brand into something that works across individual markets. Definitely one for somebody accustomed to having several campaigns, several countries and several senior stakeholders all wanting something at once.

Over in Wells, meanwhile, property people with a taste for targets might be interested in the Lettings Manager role with Palmer Snell. The advertised package includes an OTE of £50,000, uncapped commission and a company car or allowance. You'd be leading the residential lettings team, growing the branch and dealing with landlords, tenants, valuations and listings — in other words, plenty of moving parts even before anybody loses a set of keys.

Numbers, paperwork and people who actually enjoy a spreadsheet

There's a rather nice part-time option at Wells Cathedral, which is recruiting a Finance Assistant for 28 hours a week. It's permanent, paying £21,200 to £22,800 a year, equivalent to £26,500 to £28,500 full-time.

The work covers everything from processing income and invoices to reconciliations, Gift Aid, supplier payments and supporting the Cathedral shop, café and other income-generating areas. There's even weekly cash counting, which is perhaps the closest most of us are going to get to sitting in a cathedral surrounded by money without being in a particularly elaborate heist film.

In Shepton Mallet, there's also a six-month HR Advisor contract paying £40,000 to £45,000, with hybrid working of two days on site and three at home. It's a broad generalist role covering employee relations, performance, disciplinary and grievance work, recruitment, onboarding, payroll information and people projects. Ideal for somebody who can calmly hear the phrase "quick HR question" without assuming the worst.

Engineering, building sites and considerably less sitting down

A Project / CAPEX Engineer role around Wells is offering £50,000 to £60,000 plus bonus, flexi-time and a 10% pension. It's with a food manufacturer and involves leading capital projects, improving plant efficiency and working across mechanical and electrical engineering.

The job is aimed at people from manufacturing, FMCG or food backgrounds, and comes with a good degree of autonomy. In short, if you can look at an expensive bit of factory equipment and see "continuous improvement opportunity" rather than "absolutely not touching that", you're probably in the right territory.

There's more heavy engineering in Shepton Mallet, where a Multi Skilled Engineer is wanted on £55,000, with OTE above £60,000. The shift is four-on, four-off, alternating two days and two nights, with 12-hour shifts from 6am to 6pm or vice versa. Not exactly nine-to-five, but then nine-to-five rarely comes with that salary.

Also in Shepton is a Workshop HGV Engineer job offering a basic salary up to £46,500 plus overtime, on permanent day shifts. Training on new products and further courses are part of the package, so there's room to add a few more strings to the oily overall.

If construction is more your thing, Castle Cary has a Telehandler Operator vacancy paying £20 an hour, with around a year's work available on a long-term project. It calls for experience on a 10.5-metre telehandler and is refreshingly straightforward: if you know how to operate one safely and properly, somebody would quite like you to come and do exactly that.

And in Bruton, there's a Site Manager role paying up to £230 a day on a long-term temporary contract, working on planned external maintenance in social housing. A good fit for somebody who can juggle contractors, schedules and the inevitable moment when the weather decides it has its own programme of works.

Schools, kitchens and jobs where other people are the point

For anyone considering a route into education, there's a Teaching Assistant opportunity in Castle Cary, working on a day-to-day supply basis at a secondary school.

The hours are 8.30am to 3.30pm during term time, with pay of £92.56 to £95 a day, and you can work as many or as few days each week as suits. The role involves supporting pupils across Years 7 to 11, including students with additional needs, and could suit experienced TAs or graduates wanting classroom experience before heading further into education.

In Wells, a Kitchen Assistant is wanted at a retirement complex in South Horrington Village. It's a permanent 32-hour-a-week role paying £13.46 an hour, working four shifts each week between either 6.30am and 3pm or 10.30am and 7pm, including every other weekend. You'll be helping with food preparation, dishes and the wider catering service — practical work, plenty of people around, and presumably no danger of spending the afternoon wondering why nobody has replied to your Teams message.

There's also a Dispensing Optician Manager vacancy at Asda in Street. You'll need to be a fully qualified, GOC-registered dispensing optician, and the role combines clinical customer care with managing the optical department, its team, compliance and targets. Benefits include a company bonus, pension, 15% colleague discount and GOC fees paid.

A few hours here, a possible permanent job there

For something that can fit around other commitments, a manufacturing business in Shepton Mallet is recruiting a temporary part-time administrator for six to 12 hours a week, paying £14 an hour. The role stretches well beyond answering the odd phone call, with purchasing, shipments, travel arrangements, training records and general office support all in the mix. Basically, one of those jobs where knowing where everything is becomes a minor superpower.

Also in Shepton, there's a temporary-to-permanent Cleaner role paying £12.71 to £13 an hour. The hours are Monday to Thursday afternoons, generally from around 3pm or 4pm until 6pm, with at least 12 weeks of temporary work and the possibility of becoming permanent. A useful option for anyone after shorter weekday hours without surrendering the whole day.

And if you're looking to add something worthwhile to the week rather than another payslip, Save the Children is looking for Shop Volunteers in Castle Cary. There's no previous retail experience needed, hours can be flexible, and volunteers can get involved with everything from stock and tills to customers and window displays.

So, whether the aim is a full-blown career move, a few extra hours or simply finding out what else exists beyond the current workplace walls, there's quite a mix across Glastonbury, Street, Wells, Shepton Mallet, Castle Cary and Bruton this week.
