Drivers using the main routes between Wells and Shepton Mallet are being reminded they still have time to have their say on proposed new 40mph speed limits around Beacon Cross.

Somerset Council's consultation remains open until Wednesday, 7 October, with the proposals covering several stretches of road approaching the crossroads.

The scheme is not in Wells city itself, but affects roads on the Wells-Shepton corridor used regularly by drivers travelling between the two areas.

The proposed restrictions include 222 metres of Old Frome Road, running west from its junction with the A37 Long Hill, and 530 metres of the A37 Long Hill, running north and then east from the Old Frome Road junction.

On the Shepton Mallet side, the proposals also cover 220 metres of the A37 Long Hill, 346 metres of Old Frome Road and 910 metres of the A367 Bath Road.

If approved, the changes would create a consistent 40mph limit on approaches to Beacon Cross.

Somerset Council formally advertised the proposal on 16 September and says the changes are intended to improve road safety and reduce both the likelihood and severity of collisions.

The plans remain at consultation stage and no final decision has been made.

Anyone wishing to comment on or object to the proposal has until 7 October to submit their views to Somerset Council.

The consultation is listed by the authority as Various Roads, Shepton Mallet and Wells, with the proposed restriction covering a 40mph speed limit.
