Looking for work locally? Properly looking, casually nosing, or just having a scroll while pretending to do something else? Either way, the jobs board has been busy again, with roles across Glastonbury, Street, Wells, Shepton Mallet and Evercreech. There are lorries. There are blinds. There is steak. There is even a job involving hand and arm massages in Clarks Village, which is probably the closest most of us will get to a spa day before payday.

For those who like a van, a licence, or both

In Glastonbury, there's a Water Engineer Team Leader role offering £40,000 to £45,000, with OTE up to £56,000. It is days-based, Monday to Friday, with overtime, enhanced pay, door-to-door travel, a van, fuel card, training and progression. One for someone from a water engineering background who fancies stepping up, rather than spending another year muttering darkly at pipework.

Also in Glastonbury, a company is after an HGV Class 2 Concrete Pump Driver / Plant Operative. It is a full-time permanent role paying £37,000 a year, with typical hours from 7am, though flexibility is required, because concrete, like toddlers and buses, does not always respect the clock.

Staying with the big wheels, there is a Class 1 Driver role in Glastonbury paying £15 to £17 per hour, with ongoing work available. They are after reliable Class 1 C+E drivers based in or around town, with regular work and a modern fleet on offer. Ideal if your idea of peace and quiet is the cab of a lorry rather than the Tesco car park on a Saturday.

Over in Shepton Mallet, Gregory Distribution has a Class 1 Trunk Driver role on nights, Monday to Friday. If you prefer the roads when everyone else is indoors pretending they will get an early night, this one may be worth a look.

Retail, design and looking polished under strip lighting

In Street, there's a Senior Designer - Kids role based at Clarks. It involves creating seasonal product designs and prototypes, working on new constructions and shaping future children's ranges. One for someone who can think about shoes more deeply than "left one, right one, off to school".

Also at Street, Clarks is hiring a Brand Partner and eComm Visual Merchandiser. The role is based in the same building where the company was founded in 1825, which is either inspiring or a lot of pressure depending on how your Monday is going. It covers Clarks Marketplace, brand account management, ecommerce trading and onsite merchandising.

At Clarks Village, Molton Brown is after a Sales Consultant. It is a part-time role of 15 hours per week, paying £13.45 an hour, with staff discount, store bonus potential, free product allocation and the sort of fragrance knowledge that may make your bathroom shelf feel personally judged.

Care, community and actually making someone's day better

In Wells, Torrwood is hiring an Activities Co-ordinator. The role is 37.5 hours per week, with part-time applicants considered, and pays £13.77 per hour. You would be planning and delivering activities for residents, working with families, volunteers and community groups. A proper people job, in other words, and not just "people person" in the LinkedIn sense.

There is also a Day Care Host role in Shepton Mallet and the surrounding areas. Hosts use their own home to welcome a socially interactive friendship group of up to four older people, for up to two full days a week depending on local need. It is one of those roles where the kettle is probably as important as the application form.

Practical work for practical people

Back in Glastonbury, there's a Production/Yard Operative role offering 40 hours per week, with a competitive salary and bonus scheme. The advert is looking for someone reliable, motivated and keen to develop new skills at the Glastonbury branch. Good for anyone who would rather be hands-on than trapped in a meeting about "touchpoints".

And if you are handy, patient and not afraid of a tape measure, there's a Blinds and Curtains Installer role around Street. It is a flexible, self-employed-style opportunity with Hillarys, working close to home and around your own commitments. One for someone who can be trusted in strangers' bay windows and knows that "just a quick fitting" is rarely quick.

That is the local crop for now. As ever, there are more roles lurking on the Glastonbury, Wells and Shepton Mallet Nub News jobs boards, so have a browse before someone else bags the one with decent hours and no soul-destroying commute.
