Job hunting in Wells has that familiar mix of "maybe I should do something sensible" and "could I simply become independently wealthy by teatime?"

Sadly, no sign of the latter this week, but there are legal, healthcare and manufacturing roles worth a proper nose.

Visitor Operations Executive at Glastonbury Abbey is full-time, permanent, and pays £25,350 a year. You'll be across admissions, retail, events and visitor messages, which means being organised, cheerful, and able to resist saying "it's behind you" when someone fails to spot an enormous medieval ruin. Weekends, bank holidays and some evenings are included, because heritage does not clock off at 5pm.

For hands-on work, there's a Manufacturing Worker role in Castle Cary with Mars, paying £28,700–£30,400 including shift allowance. Rotating shifts run 6am–2pm, 2pm–10pm, and 10pm–6am, so your body clock may file a complaint. On the upside: decent benefits, bonuses, parking, coffee, fruit, and the quiet pride of keeping production moving.

Over in Street, Casual Nursery Practitioner at Brookside Academy Nursery pays £13.47 an hour on ad hoc hours. You'll need a Level 3 childcare qualification and the emotional strength to discuss dinosaurs, puddles and missing socks with total seriousness. A lovely one if you like early years work and can survive glitter.

In Shepton Mallet, Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer pays £53,000 a year plus bonus on a 4-on-4-off shift pattern. You'll be fixing machinery, fault-finding, handling electrical and mechanical maintenance, and being the person everyone suddenly loves when something stops working. A strong option for anyone who can look at a conveyor belt and not immediately back away.

First up, Cook at Glastonbury Care Home is a part-time role paying £13.31–£14.61 an hour. BrunelCare needs someone who can help serve proper meals to residents and visitors, keep the kitchen clean, and occasionally step up if the Head Chef is away. Previous catering experience is essential, so this is not the moment to mention that one surprisingly good air fryer phase.

For the legally inclined, Senior Qualified Residential Conveyancing Lawyer in Wells is a permanent hybrid role, three days in the office, with a salary around £60,000. It's complex residential conveyancing, mentoring juniors, and generally dealing with property matters without screaming into a file. Useful skill, that.

Evercreech has ongoing contract work for HGV2 Dust Cart Drivers, paying £18–£20 an hour, Monday to Friday, 6am–2.45pm. It is driver-loader work, so yes, there is manual graft involved. But it's steady, useful, local work — and frankly more honest than half the job adverts calling admin "mission delivery".

Also in Wells, Vision Express is after an Optometrist, with salary up to £79,000 plus car allowance and bonus. Flexible working is mentioned, which is always nice to see and slightly suspicious in the way genuinely good things can be. You'll be testing eyes, advising customers and using enough kit to make a spaceship jealous.

And finally, Senior Fundraising Manager at Somerset Community Foundation is based at Yeoman House, Bath and West Showground, with flexible working and at least one day a week in Shepton Mallet. You'll be leading donor appeals, events, stewardship and strategy, which means being good with people, words and data — the holy trinity, minus the scented candles.
