Jobs around Shepton, Wells, Glastonbury and Street: paint pots, payroll chaos and pre-dawn forklifts
By Laura Linham 15th May 2026
Whether you're properly job hunting or just scrolling with a cup of tea and a low-level dread about Monday, the local jobs board has coughed up a decent spread this week. There's paintwork in Wells, cheffing in Street, finance in Castle Cary, and enough Shepton roles to keep the roundabout gossip mill busy.
First up, Randstad CPE is after a Painter & Decorator in Wells, paying £22–£24 an hour on a full-time permanent contract. This one sits in the disrepair and mould team, so yes, you'll be tackling damp patches and mould washes rather than wafting about with Farrow & Ball samples. Still, for someone who knows their way around prep, paint and a clean finish, it's proper skilled work with solid hourly pay.
Over in Street, Platinum Recruitment is looking for Care Home Chefs on temporary ad-hoc work, paying £17.10–£22.50 an hour. You'll be cooking in care home kitchens, sorting nutritious meals and handling dietary requirements, so this is not the place for "that'll do" mash. If you've got care home experience, IDDSI training and an Enhanced DBS, it's flexible local work with Friday pay — which is always more welcome than another laminated rota.
In Shepton Mallet, there's an Assistant Manager role in retail, paying £35,000 a year on a permanent contract. The advert does flirt dangerously with "pace, people and passion", but beneath the corporate confetti this looks like a solid step for someone who can run a busy shop without developing a thousand-yard stare by 2pm. Good money, permanent role, and plenty to get your teeth into.
If spreadsheets are more your natural habitat, there's a Head of Finance – Commerce role in Castle Cary, paying £70,000 plus performance bonus and benefits. It's onsite and aimed at someone with serious commercial finance experience, so less "I made a household budget once" and more "I can explain margin pressure without everyone quietly leaving the room." A big role, with big responsibility, and pay that suggests they know it.
Back in Shepton Mallet, an HR Administrator is needed on a 12–18 month fixed-term contract, paying up to £29,000. It's full-time with one day a week from home, which is a civilised little treat unless the Teams calls start breeding. The job involves starters, leavers, records, payroll integration and building processes where things are currently a bit "find the spreadsheet and pray". For an organised HR person, it's a chance to make a real mark.
For the night owls, there's a Night Logistics Supervisor role in Shepton Mallet, paying £35,000 a year on a permanent Monday-to-Friday nights pattern. Details are a bit sparse, but logistics supervision at night usually means keeping people, stock and vehicles moving while the rest of us are drooling into a pillow. A strong option for someone who likes responsibility, quiet roads and avoiding daytime small talk.
Also in Shepton, Simple Recruitment is looking for a Counterbalance Forklift Driver, paying £13 an hour on a temporary-to-permanent basis. Start times range from 1.30am to 5am, which is less "early start" and more "why is the moon judging me?". But if you've got a valid counterbalance licence and don't mind getting properly stuck in, it's practical warehouse work with the promise of something longer-term.
Finally, there's a Business Analyst Placement Programme in Shepton Mallet. Important bit first: this is a training course and fees apply, so don't barrel in thinking it's a ready-made salaried job with a swivel chair waiting. That said, for someone serious about moving into business analysis and willing to check the costs, terms and outcomes properly, it could be a route into a better-paid office career.
That's the local mix for now: paint, care kitchens, forklifts, finance and the noble art of making HR systems behave. For more roles, fresh listings and the odd advert that raises an eyebrow, keep an eye on the Nub News jobs board.
