An international art exhibition returns to Wells this autumn as Wells Art Contemporary (WAC) takes over the cloisters and internal spaces of Wells Cathedral from Wednesday 8 October to Saturday 1 November.

This year's show features 93 shortlisted works displayed in a white‑wall gallery wound around three sides of the cathedral cloisters, alongside 22 site‑specific installations scattered through the cathedral and gardens. The open competition, now in its 14th year, draws entries from around the world.

WAC chair Paddy O'Hagan said: "We are absolutely delighted to be hosted again by Wells Cathedral. It is a truly magnificent and special setting … This is an art exhibition unlike any other … we invite everyone to experience some of the finest work from around the world, right here in Wells."

Among the Somerset artists exhibiting are Tony Ting Mo Chau of Wedmore, showing a photograph titled Midnight Sun, and Jude Painter from Cheddar, exhibiting Beach Picnic. Shepton Mallet artist Fiona Campbell will install Threads of Light in the cathedral's Chapter House, exploring themes of climate, connection and the natural world.

New this year, Dean Toby Wright has asked artists to respond to the theme Flowing Light, inspired by the mystical writings of 13th‑century Mechthild of Magdeburg. Entrants were encouraged to consider luminosity, spiritual illumination and the natural flow of movement in light.

Visitors may cast a vote for their favourite work in the People's Choice competition, with the winner awarded £500. Entry to WAC is included in cathedral admission; further details are available on the WAC website.
