As Somerset gears up for a major housing expansion in 2024, Wells is set to play its own role with a small housing development on the cards.

This is part of a wider plan to construct over 12,000 new homes across the county, addressing current residents' and newcomers' growing housing needs.

In Wells, a notable development is proposed for Gypsy Lane, comprising 47 homes. This project is a vital component of the county's extensive housing strategy and reflects the ongoing commitment to meet the housing demand in the area.

While the Wells development is significant, it's part of a broader list of 50 potential sites across Somerset. Major projects include the Selwood Garden Community in Frome, envisaging 1,700 homes, and the Monkton Heathfield urban extension in Taunton with 1,450 homes. The West Woolavington site plans to nearly double the size of the village with 1,400 new homes.

Other substantial developments include Bridgwater's Bower Lane project with 750 homes and the West Wincanton site, aiming to expand Wincanton by 650 homes. Similarly, Crewkerne's Key Site phase two is expected to add 525 homes.

However, the progress of these projects may face delays due to additional phosphate mitigation requirements following the Dutch N court case, potentially extending the timeline for construction.
