You know that a magic show is good when even the most cynical observer looks at the tricks and thinks: "I have no idea how they did that."

That was exactly the view I had after watching the new magic and illusion show Hocus Pocus at Wookey Hole Caves.

Nearly an hour and a half long, the show was a non-stop ride through dancing, tricks, comedy and acrobatics, and my family loved every minute of it.

At the heart of the show is the theme that all the magic tricks and illusions are performed by women, and these Witches of Wookey Hole played their parts to perfection.

The illusions themselves were staggering, with people disappearing all over the place, or being cut into various pieces – my six-year-old son was a mixture of excited fear and joy, while my eight-year-old daughter was awe-struck and has decided that she wants to be a magician when she is older.

I don't want to spoil the end of the show, but the final trick must be seen to be believed and left the audience members scratching their heads over how it could possibly be done.

There were a few male stars of the show as well, with one being the unfortunate stooge who had many tricks performed on him by the witches, another performed a fantastic crossbow scene and was outstanding in a trapeze act with his female partner, while the final one did a top notch fire juggling act and performed some gravity-defying chair balancing, again with a female partner.

In between the magic sets, a number of dancers entertained, not just with normal routines, but with moves where they bent their bodies into shapes that I did not know the body could bend into.

Overall, Hocus Pocus is a great addition to the attractions at Wookey Hole Caves, and I highly recommend it for families looking for a different kind of stage show.

There are 12 performances over the summer, and it will return at Halloween. The first night is Wednesday July 24 with the final show being on Saturday August 31. Each performance starts at 7.30pm.
