He-Man wraps filming in Wells as cathedral returns to normal after month of movie mayhem

Hollywood has officially left the building – and Wells can finally breathe again.
Universal Studios crews packed up and moved out over the weekend after spending almost a month filming Masters of the Universe inside one of Somerset's most iconic landmarks.
Wells Cathedral was partially closed from 20 May to 14 June, with key areas like the Chapter House and North Transept off-limits while production took over. On 4 and 5 June, the entire cathedral was shut to the public – a rare move for the historic site.
Production vehicles lined Cathedral Green throughout the shoot, but by Monday, the area was back to its usual flow of tourists, shoppers and coffee drinkers.
The star-studded cast includes Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man himself – aka Prince Adam of Eternia – with Jared Leto stepping into the role of Skeletor. Idris Elba plays Man-At-Arms (Duncan), while Alison Brie takes on the role of Evil-Lyn. Morena Baccarin joins the cast as The Sorceress.
Matthew Minter, Head of Filming at Wells Cathedral, said: "After a hugely successful film shoot on location here at Wells Cathedral, it is time to bid farewell to the production team of Masters of the Universe.
"During the past four weeks, the production team has worked closely with me in order to minimise disruption to the daily life of the Cathedral. It has been challenging to coordinate logistics, but all has generally gone smoothly and I was delighted that the Cathedral was able to remain open to the public at all times other than one of the film shoot days.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Cathedral staff, volunteers and not least the Cathedral community for all the support, patience and understanding during this production.
"Filming offers a vital source of income to the Cathedral and I look forward to welcoming future productions very soon.
"Finally, I can now share with you that Masters of the Universe will be released on 5 June 2026 – so do put the date in your diaries to go and see it on the big screen."
An apologetic sign stuck to the entrance during filming read: "Visitor information – Cathedral is in use for filming – no access to Cathedral for visitors (for June 4 – June 5). Café and shop remain open and said evening prayer will be in Vicars Close Chapel. We apologise for any inconvenience."
It's not the first time the cathedral's starred on screen – Wolf Hall and Hot Fuzz were both filmed here. But for now, at least, Wells is back to normal – until the next big-budget blockbuster rolls into town.
