Time is running out for Wells residents to have their say on the future of The Britannia Inn on Bath Road.

The community consultation, focused on reopening the pub as a community-owned establishment, is drawing to a close this Friday, January 19, 2024.

The Britannia Inn, currently on the market with the Caldecotte Group for £350,000, has been vacant for over two years.

Wells City Council has moved to secure its future by applying for an Asset of Community Value status with Somerset Council. If approved, this status will safeguard the pub from being sold or demolished for six months, providing a window for the community to raise funds for its purchase.

A steering group is spearheading the initiative for community ownership and is seeking input from residents.

The campaign has already gained momentum, with over 270 signatures on the 'Save the Brit' petition and significant attendance at an early public meeting. However, acquiring the pub is just the first step; substantial funds will also be needed for refurbishment.

The steering group is exploring collaborations with local entities like St Thomas' Church, which is also considering community-focused initiatives.

Residents can submit their completed questionnaires at Wells Town Hall, Wells Library, St Thomas' Church Office, or online at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TheBritWells.
