Deadline looms for Wells Street Cinema Project

If you fancy yourself as the next Edgar Wright, you've got just a couple of weeks to get your entry into a new competition.

A new street film project - known as kinokotch – is offering two commissions for aspiring filmmakers to make films about Wells, with the opportunity to showcase aspects of the city that aren't often focused on by the big production companies.

'Kino' in Europe means cinema. 'Kotch' is a Jamaican slang expression for hanging or chilling at a location for a temporary amount of time and the project is being run by Somerset Film and Fabian's Films, supported by Mendip District Council and Arts Council England

Who Can Apply

Individuals or groups may apply but you/they must live or work in Wells or the immediate surrounding areas in Mendip. There is no minimum or maximum age limit. You don't need to have any experience in filmmaking to apply but you must be committed to seeing your idea through to completion. You do not need to have attended one of the Kinokotch community filmmaking workshops to apply. Under 18's must be supported by an adult (parent / carer).

What They Are Looking For

The aim is to make two short films inspired by and placed in the city of Wells. You will be required to spend time between December 2022 and March 2023 walking around a specific/designated area (on the street, in cafes and public spaces, etc) in or near Wells, acting as 'Kotchers', making connections with communities, researching and recording your experiences of the built and natural environment using mixed media (sketch book, iPad/iPhone, digital camera/audio, etc). The final film should directly respond to this experience.

The Commissions

There are two commissions available. If you are successful, then you will be supported by a mentor (Dr. John Sealey of Fabian's Films), given access to Somerset Film equipment and a fee of £1,000. This can be used to pay yourselves expenses, for your time involved or costs relating to the production e.g. travel, actors, music etc. If you apply on behalf of a group or others, then the fee must be fairly shared with them. The films must be made from December to March, and completed by April 2023. They will be showcased as part of outdoor film screenings during 2023. The films will be required to credit both Somerset Film, Dr John Sealey and the funders. Other conditions such as the use of risk assessments, copyright-free music or licensed music only will apply. Full guidelines will be given to the successful filmmakers.

How to Apply

Complete an online application form by 5pm on Friday 25th November 2022https://form.jotform.com/222962264587062
