A CLEAN up campaign in Wells was judged such a success that it is going to be repeated in June.

Deputy mayor Councillor Celia Wride organised a litter pick around the city in March as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

Organisations and individuals who got involved met for a feedback session with Celia in Wells Town Hall on April 20.

As a result, another litter pick has been planned for June 1, 2 and 3.

"The meeting was really well attended and there were lots of suggestions for the future," said Celia.

"One was contacting local farmers and reusing feed bags instead of using green rubbish bags. Another was painting eyes on walls where people persistently drop litter.

"Tom Ronan of Plastic Free Wells suggested a two-minute clean. The idea is that when you are going out or arriving somewhere you take just two minutes to pick up litter near you."

Plastic Free Wells volunteers removed 14 bags of rubbish from St Andrew's stream near the Lidl store in one morning during the March litter pick.

Others taking part included Badgers from St John Ambulance who cleaned up outside their headquarters in Wells.

 

Among the items found during the clear up were a toaster, half a satellite dish, a pair of men's underpants, parts of a bicycle, a tarpaulin, and in one case, 25 bags of dog poo hanging among the trees at Wookey Hole Road.

Favourite among discarded cans was reported to be Thatchers Gold, while Sauvignon Blanc was the most spotted of the empty wine bottles.

"Janet Bedford found a lovely stone painted with a picture of a little cat by a young lady called Layah, aged six, which I have on my kitchen table in case she wants to claim it, and a very lovely earring, both obviously lost rather than being thrown away," said Celia.

She added: "I have talked to Nick Cater at Somerset Waste Partnership about including the question of getting proper lids for recycling bins, to prevent everything flying away on windy days, when the new contract negotiations for commercial suppliers start in 2020."
